Albert Ostermaier told me that MGM bought the Lippizan that Robert Young rode and Albert had trained it and taught Robert Young how to ride. I had purchased a copy of Florian and he and his wife Nancy was able to watch it once again before he passed away. The Lippizan association have copies of Florian for sale if anyone would like one. |

I believe that Albert was close to me in age and in 1939 I would have been eight yearsb old., so he would have had been only a youth at that time. Mr Jack Joyce was a widely recognized horse trainer of both Haute ecole and liberty, even as a young adult. I have seen the movie a couple of times and Jack is given screen credits. In one scene in the stable Jack is actually on camera as well. Jack did spend time off and on in Calif.,but went to Australia for a time training for Wirth Circus, at which time he purchased a bunch of camels for Loiuie Goebel and was given four that he trained for a contract for Louie Stern Polack circus. At the time of the movie there were also a number of competent horse trainers in Calif. Jack told me some about the movie. He was a verycapable guy. Albert had his high school horses booked with Polack and was drafted into military service at which time he made a deal for Jack to ride and for the great Ernestine Clark Baer to come out of retirement and present the long line horse. which they did that season and it was also the first year for his camel act and also Mac Macdonald and the Tom Oacks baby elephants. Later Albert would train and present a Goat act on Polack. He never liked to have that fact mentioned in his resume. Just for the record. incidentally I saw the show that year in both Ft. Wayne and Indianapolis. Jack was a very handsome and capable man with alot of class. I wouls say he was one of my idols.
It is quite possible that Albert Ostermaier was referring to the 1963 Disney film MIRACLE OF THE WHITE STALLIONS, and that he taught its star Robert TAYLOR how to ride.
Eric & John,
I wasn't around so I can't say for sure but Albert had told me he trained the horse and taught Robert Young how to ride in the movie Florian. Thus the reason that I sent him the video of Florian to watch. He also mentioned it in one of the first Videos he made and sold. I think he said he was 19 years old at the time(I will go back and watch it to find out for sure). The one picture that I sent to Buckles had a date on it of 1947. I will send Dianne an email and see if she can be of any further help.
