The 1961 season marked the return of Merle Evans to the GSOE after a 5-year absence. He’d left the show at the end of the 1955 season and had been replaced by Izzy Cervone. (Evans would later say that this was due to salary considerations. However, many feel that, after having been with the Circus for 36 years, he saw all to clearly what bad shape – both financially and managerially – the show was in and realized that it was not going to make it through the 1956 season, which it didn’t.) By 1961, the Circus was once again traveling on its own special train and Evans returned for another 8 years of service. He retired at the end of the 1969 season, 50 years after he’d first joined Ringling in 1919.
