Years Ago Today This picture was made fifty years ago today at the Overton Park Zoo in Memphis. Left to right are John Hall and his then wife Wink (several years later John was manager of the Hoxie show) and the guy on the right is a very young Whitey on the way to his first circus job on the advance of Famous Cole owned by Herb Walters and Glenn Jarmes. I had already bought a Greyhound Bus ticket to Hugo when John offered to drive me down in their Volkswagen if I would give him the cost of the ticket. I went downtown, managed to get a refund on my bus ticket and handed the dough over to John. We left Nashville bright and early Friday morning and after several stops along the way arrived in Hugo that night and found a motel. Saturday morning we located the Famous Cole bill crew getting their paper sorted and stored in the trucks and I talked to Jarmes, who had hired me, and met the car manager, Francis Kitzman. Halls left for home that day and I checked into the Webb Hotel. Sunday we pulled out for our first town, Cooper, Texas. I was in SHO BIZ!!! Dave |

John Hall was the best friend a circus fan ever had.I can recall every year he was on the Hoxie show always having collectables ready for me.Not to mention his kindness with tickets.
He is a big reason the Hoxie Brothers Circus became the show it was.He strived for excellance in all areas.Making sure the fans more than got their moneys worth.
I think I first met John at the tender age of 11 or 12.This after Hoxie took me into the office to get me pictures for my collection.
My little town of St.Cloud,Fl was blessed to have the Hoxie show play their in its infancy and heyday. It played my elementary school gounds from 1967 to 1972.Growing bigger and better every season.I met so many of the greats on that lot. Finally in 1973 the show became too big and we had to go to Melbourne,Fl.Still John and Hoxie extended me the utmost personal attention.
John Hall is a most worthy candidate for inclusion into the Circus Hall Of Fame.He tells me the years he spent with Hoxie were the best of his life.
John ,I am proud to say has become what I consider a dear friend.THanks a million my circus friend. You gave me so many memorable moments few little boys attain. You are the best!!
THe best thing he truly loved the circus.Lots of folks endure it but to him a dream achieved.
Ole Whitey,
Do you remember the weather when you got to Hugo? Because 50 years and a day later we are showing in snow flurries. I am thinking we can debunk the whole "global warming theory"
The weather was fair in Hugo.
I remember that in Bridgeport, Texas, they had a "Norther" come through and I bought my first pair of Long Johns but we saw no snow that spring.
I also recall that John Frazier booked us into 32 dry Texas towns; a billposter can never forget that kind of abuse.
We showed Bridgeport (wet) last week. We only hit about 7 dry towns in the last 6 weeks in TX. Also, as I am sure you know, after a bad stretch of dry towns, you learn to remember which towns to stock up in the next year.
