The Ringlings also had a rig similar to this one, used in parade, about the time of the Spanish American War. I think some wise acre press agent also wrote the war department, offering the use of elephants for duty. Then there were the John Robinson Military Elephants doing precision drills and all that sort of aggrandizement. Hopefully the men in arms saw the humor and respect in it.
