These pictures from Joey Ratliff are treasures.
When I was a little kid, I was knocked out by my first visit to Ringling Bros Circus in Madison Square Garden (three rings, two stages; the arena floor covered in pink sawdust; hundreds of mysterious ropes and wires hanging from the Garden's ceiling; three wild-animal big cages set up in the rings). Then one day, I saw some pictures of Winter Quarters at Sarasota. Wow! This is where they "put together, create" the circus. Not many pictures. Just a few. But each one magic. Never did get to visit the winter quarters out near Fruitland Rd. So very glad to see these pictures. One bit of irony. The first time I did visit Sarasota was in the early 80s. Went to a tourism office on US41. Asked where the old Ringling Bros. winter quarters had been located? No one knew what I was talking about. --ToddP
