Dobritch International Circus #1

Scan10830, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Produced by Al Dobritch
Paul Kaye announcer and manager.

After our marriage in December of 1959, Barbara and my first big break into the big Indoor dates came from Mr. Dobritch. I think the reason he fell heir to Orin Davenport's dates was because he put on a more glamorous show.

Unfortunately our association eventually ended on a sour note. After we had joined the Polack Show I was surprised to learn that Louie Stern booked the elephants on Ed Sullivan and Hollywood Palace thru Dobritch. Receiving a year round salary from the show I didn't expect anything extra for these outside gigs so imagine my surprise when I received an Income Tax statement from the Sullivan people for a sizable sum that I had supposedly been paid, (I forget the amount).

I went to Louie and raised Hell pointing out that Dobritch could go to jail for such undertakings but rather than have any problems, he paid me the money himself and continued to do so every time we appeared on the show. No doubt the amount was insignificant compared to publicity garnered.

I found this interesting as Mack MacDonald had a similar experience. In an earlier post you tell about looking for Mack to train Pack's herd. You mention that, "He had gottem away from elephants." He had gotten away from Bob Stevens and Bailey Bros. Elephants. During the winter of '47-'48 with winter quarters in ElMonte, CA, Mack also worked Babe nightly in Ken Murray's Blackouts at the El Capiton Theater in Hollywood. Stevens refused to pay any additional salary so Mack, Peggy, and the Hendersons left the show after about 4 weeks and joined Dale's Bros. in SC. At this time Peggy was still a big part of the Henderson Trio juggling and balancing acts so we were a package deal. Anyway, glad your Dad recommended and found him.
Peg's sister, Billie Lou Henderson.
