Ken - -Thanks for the great description of your visit to Hagenbecks.
As you may know, Carl's grandson, Erich (son of Lorenz), was with RBBB in 1941. Calling on his grandfather's legacy, he designed for the Sarasota WQs the barless hippo grottos and pools and also the barless monkey island with water moat surrounding it.
The work was done over the summer of 1941 and was ready or almost ready to receive the animals when the show returned at the end of that tour.
Alas World War II came to the USA in December, 1941. All aliens from enemy nations were eventually rounded up and that included Erich Hagenbeck. In April 1942 he was sent to an internment camp in North Dakota for the duration of the War.
Another RBBB employee interred was Alfred Court’s German trainer, Fritz Schultz. He was arrested on June 4, 1942 while the show was in Philadelphia.
MR REYNOLDS YOU ARE AMAZING! I SINCERELY HOPE YOU HAVE RECORDED ON PAPER OR TAPE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN OF YOUR VAST WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE.
KEN, WE NEED PHOTOS......LOTS AND LOTS OF PHOTOS. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS WONDERFUL WRITEUP.
PAUL G.
