From Robert Cox (In Mexico)

Buckles I'm sure you've heard about the elephant hit by a bus in Mexico...here's what info I've heard through the news.
Circo Union had some Elephants & other animals in a Winter Quarters(?) near Mexico City, the "caretaker" ..looked like a young kid to me, told news reporters he had been waiting all day for food (hay) for the elephant when she (Indira) was frightened by a cat and stamped against a chain link fence escaping through some bushes and entering an expressway where she was hit by a bus & killed. The bus driver also died, 11 minor injuries and 1 person hospitalized. A spokesman for the circus talked to the newsmen yesterday saying they were going to pay for all damages incurred.
This is a triple blow for Circo Union, they lost an elephant, had to pay for serious damages and fueled the flames for animal activists groups.
Yesterday I heard that PROFEPA, a governmental environmental group that is simialar to the U.S.D.A. in the States, Confiscated one of ther Elephants and some tigers saying the circus was negligent in their safety regulations concerning the general public around their winter quarters. Hopefully they will be able to straighten these problems out in the near future.
