Clyde Beatty (From Roger Smith)

clyde beatty, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

There was not an appropriate place to put this on the blog today, and I'm running late tonight, but perhaps if no one has heard the story put this way before, it may hold interest for Clyde Beatty fans.

On July 6, 1965, the world press carried stories that Mr. Beatty was rushed from his home in Ventura, California, to Community Memorial Hospital, hemorrhaging severely from his metastasized cancer. Immediately upon admittance, he lapsed in to a coma, which lasted until the early morning of July 19th.

His brother-in-law, Earl Abel, Jr., for whom I worked in San Antonio, told me this story: "Clyde came out of the coma very suddenly. He reached over and buzzed for a nurse, which really took them by surprise. A staff of nurses entered his room to find him out of bed, walking around and he was very coherent in everything he said. They were floored by how clear-minded he was. He told them, 'Find my wife. Jane's around here somewhere. Get my clothes, and I'll have her bring the car around, so I can get out of here.' A nurse said, 'Mr. Beatty, are you all right? Is there any pain?' He told them all, 'No, no, I'm fine. I'm over it now. Let me get dressed and I'll go home. It's all OK now.' "

Jane was summoned from a break in the cafeteria, and was astonished that her husband was up and demanding to be taken home. She helped him get his clothes in order, as the doctors came in. They knew what they were seeing was a terminal patient rallying--the point in which human life makes one last determined drive to survive. Vital signs go up and stabilize, and for a few moments, or sometimes days, families try to take on hope. The doctors never set his dismissal papers in motion, and within a few hours, Mr. Beatty's coma returned.

At about the time Boom-Boom would have been making Mr. Beatty's announcement for his matinee, at 2:30 pm, he passed into legend these 43 years ago.

His funeral was held in the Church of the Hills, at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, in Los Angeles, on July 22nd. Character actor and friend Pat O'Brien delivered the eulogy.

Gee Gee once said the two greatest men she worked for in showbusiness were Clyde Beatty and Gene Autry. One day maybe we'll get to listen in on their jackpots.

On this day, some of us feel we have never really said good-bye to Mr. Beatty. Just, "So long, Boss. See you again on the Big Lot."

May all our great showfolks share eternal rest and peace.

Roger Smith

I've been thinking about this lately - especially with the passing of Gee Gee Engesser. The best thing about this blog is that now we get to hear stories like this, no matter how long ago. The Circus family tree, (as I mentioned in an earlier message) is so vast. And somehow we are ALL connected to each other in a very special way. I never met Mr. Beatty, but saw him in action at the tender age of 8 years old when my dad took me to the Beatty Show in Orlando, Florida for my birthday. I never realized at the time that I would spend 12 years working on the show bearing his name. So in a round about way, I have that connection. I met Gee Gee Engesser in person one time...pretty much in passing, but she made me feel like I was the most important thing at that moment...so I have that connection...in fact I considered working with her sister Roxy one winter, until my husband became ill. You and I spent a year in the "trenches" working for Dave Hoover... I have that connection... Even though MY contribution to the "tree" is pretty insignificant, I was always surrounded by solid, great people like the Hoovers and the Herriotts, let alone getting my real start under the tutilage of the Woodcocks. Not having come from a circus background I really never knew who people were, or how they were connected but stories like this...of Clyde Beatty, and Gee Gee Engesser's memorium adds one more "twig" in that Circus Family tree.

Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you, Cindy.

But in the estimation of everyone who knows you, you are about as connected as anyone can get. Perhaps only Johnny Pugh would know more about the Beatty show than you, but you are the encyclopedia we hear from. I was born a towner, too, and had to make my way into the circus world. A good, strong deal would bring me back overnight, and on my specs and terms, I'm up for it.

Just heard from our Duchess, and she is dying to meet you. I replied in today's mail, she could never meet better showfolks. She is totally lost without phone service and her computer. Anyone who can, should write to her and keep her spirits up, as for now they are really down.

Previously, several readers inquired of Rebecca, and I regret to say her life has gotten tougher now. Not only is she without electricity, but her water has been shut off. We need a fund for Retired Showfolks, but I can see it would lead to many contentious questions. Still, one of our own doesn't deserve a life of such privation. God help her.

Gee Gee introduced me to Roxy and her son also, with the prospects of going out with their petting zoo. But I finished out 1981 with you guys and Hoover, and never saw Roxy again.

Thanks again, Cindy, for the kind response.

Roger, do you remember the post that you put Rebecca's address? I wrote it down and wrote a letter first to see if she would get it and I haven't heard a thing? I might have got the wrong address? Please put it up again and I will clean my glasses! Thanks!

Roger S., in regard to Rebecca, anyone who has ever been a member of AGVA may receive emergency funds to meet just this kind of situation. Contact me via CircuSpace or Wade has my e-mail so I can get a few more details to find the resources for her. Turning off essentials just can't be tolerated.

This is such sad news about Rebecca. I wonder why the locals and the fire and police are not doing more (or anyting) to help her out, since she spoke so fondly of them in her threads? And, since she is taking in and caring for, feeding and loving older pets and ones that had no home. What about some of the owners of the ones that she groomed? This is just not right. I would like to help out and will be sending her some money on the 1st (payday, for our retired military guys and dolls as my hubby is retired from the NAVY). Thanks for her address and the update, sad as it is.

PS she was so mad at me before (a long time back) over words on the blog...but maybe she will accept me now. I truly would love to help her and the critters out. Does she still take care of them? How without running water and electricity? God Bless her! Karen Glenn

How Rebecca carries on she did not say, except that she goes to bed at dark when she can no longer see to function.  She did have the Chief of Police and the Fire Chief as clients, and groomed their dogs.  She now barters grooming for items to survive.  She once told me she was "too poor to paint and too proud to whitewash", so this may keep her reluctant to apply for assistance.  I don't know anyone in showbusiness who hasn't gone Tap City now and then, bruised pride or no.  Maybe assistance can come from the sources looking for people so in need.

FOR ROGER OR JOHN: please send me your email at hedgar9608@aol.com. i have something that might help rebecca, but i think her pride might allow her to accept the idea through someone she knows better. we need to do something -- a real fix, not a band-aid -- because nobody should be without electric or water 24/7.

I too felt I needed to help her, so I sent her a check last week. She called me yesterday and explained in a very proud tone, that she was OK. The tornado that hit close to her last year knocked the heck out of her power grid at her house, but she told me that she was an ole Showbroad and that she could handle it! I hope pride doesn't get in her way in case anyone else feels like they would like to help? Had a nice conversation, and we both wish we could cross paths someday? Gotta love her Spirit!
