Audubon Paper #1 (From Joey Ratliff)

audubonpaper1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

A couple of days ago Ken Kawata and Richard Reynolds wrote a couple of artcles on zoos and thier lack of a relationship with circus and the dropping of animal shows in an attempt to walk the AZA line. I agree with alot of the points but I wanted to let them know that all of us are not clones. You and other bloggers have read my comments about the things we do down here but I never bothered to send anything in because I'd rather hang paper for those that have influenced me.The president and CEO of Audubon Nature Institute (parent name of all 9 local Audubon facilities) Ron Forman thinks of us as not only a conservation faclity but also an entertainment entity. Here I offer a few of my favorite newspaper shots from my years here. The photos of the show I found on flickr.com by searching "Audubon Zoo Elephant Show". I wish I had some shots of my wife's sea lion act, maybe another time.

Buckles, thanks for runiing these. I'd like to add that in the weeks after Hurricane, we made good use of these harnesses. The police came in and confiscated our supply of deisel fuel so we could only use backhoes and tractors sparingly. Good ole' elephant power was used to remove most of the 100+ downed trees.
