CLYDE BEATTY SAVES THE DAY! Chapter 10

Clyde Beatty3, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

DARKEST AFRICA was later reissued under the title KING OF JUNGLELAND. Shown along with Clyde and Manuel King (who plays a jungle boy named Baru) is a gorilla who appears in the serial as Baru’s protector. Inside the gorilla suit was Ray “Crash” Corrigan who later starred in many B-Westerns and serials. (He continued to do occasional gorilla and space monster gigs well into the 1950s.) He was apparently something of an entrepreneur as well. His movie ranch “Corriganville” in Simi Valley was one of the principal movie and TV locations during the 1940s and 1950s.

CLYDE BEATTY FILMOGRAPHY
1932--consulted (or assisted) on filming of TARZAN THE APE MAN, at MGM. He wasn't among the cast.

1933--THE BIG CAGE, based on his book with Edward Anthony, at Universal.  It became a Realart re-release in 1950.

1934--THE LOST JUNGLE, as noted by Eric, a serial later cut into a feature.  Both above films co-starred a very young Mickey Rooney.

1936--DARKEST AFRICA, Republic's first serial.  I worked background on this lot, now CBS/Studio City.  In honor of the great history of this lot, Studio City has its own Walk of Fame.
1940--CAT COLLEGE, as a  "short subject" Pete Smith Specialty, shot at the Clyde Beatty Jungle Zoo, in Ft. Lauderdale.
1941--CLYDE BEATTY'S ANIMAL THRILLS, as a Castle Film, the old home movies available on 8mm and 16mm reels. In '05, I bought a copy from eBay.
1943--CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN, with Milburn "Doc" Stone as Fred Mason the lion trainer, and Beatty's BIG CAGE arena action used in long shots.  They even darkened and curled Stone's hair to resemble Beatty.
1949--AFRICA SCREAMS, with Abbott and Costello, and Hilary Brooke.  Through Lou's daughter, Cris Costello, I had a brief correspondence with Ms. Brooke not long before her death.  She loved to hear from fans and told me everyone on the set respected how Beatty handled his animals.  From Nassour Studios.

1953--PERILS  OF THE JUNGLE, a Commodore Production.

1953--THE PIT OF UMANGI, also by Commodore, which apparently was shelved.  Walter White, Jr. and wife Shirley Thomas squabbled over who was boss, and Commodore was coming apart about this time.  This team also produced the CLYDE BEATTY RADIO SHOW.

1954--RING OF FEAR, produced by Beatty's drinking buddy John Wayne and his partner Bob Fellows, who was a pallbearer at Beatty's funeral.  I met co-star Pat O'Brien in 1981, who told me of delivering the eulogy.  In 2001, I had many visits with Sean McClory, who played Dublin O'Malley, and who had terrific stories about the filming in Phoenix.  Wayne-Fellows Productions sent this one out of Warner Bros.

On this 105th anniversary of his birth, it is good to see these contributions.

Happy Birthday, Boss.  Rest in peace.  You will never be forgotten.

If you google "Costello and Clyde Beatty", you'll find a short clip from Africa Screams in which Abbott is talking about Costello hunting tigers in India with Clyde Beatty, not realizing he is talking to Mr. Beatty. Good stuff.

TO SHANNON: If you get this, kindly advise what I'm doing wrong. As you see here, I tried to separate the films into paragraphs for easier reading,bu the kept jumping back together. I kept pressing "enter" to re-set the paragaphs, and thought I had it when I submitted, but look how it is now. Not what I tried for. Can I correct this on my end?

Also, somehow I thought I had to enter an e-mail address and a password to contribute here. Before, I just entered my name. How do I go back to the name alone?

Thanks.

Good luck on going back to the days of just entering your name.

Google wants your email for their database.

When you post you have 4 listed options...

Google/Blogger
You create a Google or Blogger ID and you can upload a avatar picture. Your mug shot

OpenID
Dont know much about this one....It looks to be able to use your AOL INSTANT MESSENGER (AIM) ID and os other popular chat applications.

Name/URL
Here you can just give it a Name and a web address.

This is the final choice. Many use thise because they dont know how to do the other three.

My recommendation is to get a Google account. If not, use the Name/URL and enter anything for the web address. Just so your posts will have your name on it.

When it comes to formatting. Yeah you get a little box to type your posts in. One thing you can do and I do it often is to use a word processor program like Word or even Notepad and type out what you want then COPY & PASTE it into the little box. Dont worry your formatting will remain when Dad gets around to giving your post the green light.
