Clyde Beatty Serials (From Eric Beheim)

Clyde Beatty1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

In honor of Clyde Beatty’s birthday on June 10th, here is some material from his two starring serials. The first of these, THE LOST JUNGLE (1934) was actually released as both a 12-chapter serial and as a feature film. The feature film version had scenes that didn’t appear in the serial and had a different ending. The trailer (i.e. the preview of coming attractions) included footage of John Helliott (whom Beatty refers to in one of his books an “assistant trainer”) actually being attacked on the set by a Himalayan bear. (While the bear is chewing on Helliott’s leg, someone can be seen attempting to subdue the bear using a shovel handle.) This bear attack footage did NOT make it into either the serial or the feature!
