It was fairly well-known that Buck was reticent around wild stock. He liked to stay back in the camps drinking gin rickeys and playing with the native girls while the real jungle boys went out and captured his trade.
Tony Gentry told me of the time they were in the Garden with RBB, in '38, and a lion got out. Everyone ran to Buck to manage the escape. Tony said Buck quickly looked at his watch and said, "Gee, look at the time. I gotta go do that radio show. Tony, go catch that lion." And Frank Buck found the nearest exit.
buck was apparently a better con man than animal trapper. i read his book a few years ago and honestly believed he was a one-man trapping expedition! he seemed so brave and fearless. then i learned that almost none of it, as far as his "and then i did this..." adventures were true. it should be labeled fiction rather than non-fiction!
