In 2005, Patricia and I visited Lee Powell’s grave in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. At that time, security inside the cemetery was quite tight and they didn’t encourage people coming up unannounced. (Apparently, they’d had some vandalism and were concerned about the cemetery becoming a possible terrorist target.) The tour buses were allowed to drive through but not to stop. We went up by cab, and almost as soon as we pulled up by the administration building, a senior security guard came up on a motor scooter to find out what we were doing there. Fortunately, I’d written ahead and they were expecting us, although not on that particular day. To make our visit as brief as possible, they had that same security guard escort us directly to the gravesite, which would have taken us some little time to find on our own. The guard, whom I’m sure had been there for many years, was amazed to learn that Lee Powell had been the original Lone Ranger of the movies, and wrote this information down in a notebook. |
