Wallace Bros. Circus 1938-40 #4

To the uninformed, the man above is not selling tickets, he is collecting the "tax money" from those presenting "free passes". Mostly those who had allowed circus posters to be displayed on their barns or places of business. Hence the term "Tax Box".

Buckles, was this another place to "make money" like the high ticket box shelf and Reserved Seats on the walkway by the rings?

Bill,
There are many ways to make a little extra and the tax box was one of them. Recently a well known circus owner added a service charge to the free adult tickets and then the poor guy got hauled into court. Another way to knock down on an individual basis was to find the Coke cups that were not crushed, wipe them out and recycle them to the public. The cups were checked out and the 2nd filling was gravy. For the health of the person after you crush your cup.

When I was on the Castle show, we had Doc Barbre running concessions. He had a long association with Terrell Jacobs, of whom he told me Jacobs often said on shows, "Don't bother paying me a salary. Just give me the Tax Box."
