RBBB 1922 bannerline

A change like night and day
The effect—and advantage—of a wagon-mounted folding bannerline can be seen in this pair of 1922 Ringling-Barnum photos. In 1915 the Barnum show added two folding bannerline wagons either side of the entrance to augment their traditional cloth banners. This combination was used until 1929 when two more slightly longer wagons were added to completely supplant the cloth banners. The Barnum show skipped using the wagons in 1917 but they returned for 1918 and made the transition to the combined show in 1919 which used them each year except for 1921. Throughout these earlier years of the original two wagons, the fronts and tops were often altered season-to-season. All four bannerline wagons eventually went to the Ringling Museum.
