Banner Line wagons #1 (From Richard Flint)

bannerline Popular Mechanics

For Jim Zajicek, curator of the curious
Here is a 1952 Popular Mechanics illustration explaining how the bannerline wagons worked. Such wagon show fronts were traditional on the European fairground and their use came to the US with the birth of the carnival business and were first used on the Barnum show in 1915. The next railroad show to use them was Cole in 1949 after Jack Tavlin bought the show and these were later used only on the 1955 King truck show. Subsequently, in 1959, Beatty-Cole inaugurated folding banners but have not used their folding set since about the time they abandoned the side show. Only a few other truck shows have tried folding bannerlines. Probably the best photo of how the Ringling wagons appeared from the backside is the (in)famous 1956 Pittsburgh view of the last day under canvas.

Around showpeople the cloth or canvas banners are referred to as, "The rag bannerline". I have been on circuses with oth and believe that the animation of the Rag banner gently moving in the even slightest breeze would cause some activity or a little excitement rather than some painted panels. Would be interested to hear from those involv3ed as to that theory. Also the flags at the top of the bannerline would also add and of course a good "talker"

First..Thanks to all for the fine photos and Knowledge and effort to pass on the info to me... Ward and Chris had a fold out banner line built on 2 pup trailers....Ward told me it eliminated the worry of wind...However, he said on todays Carnival Midway it blends in to much with the Fun houses and Dark rides...Thats 1 reason he returned to a Rag Front...However I like the "Look" of the RBBB Bannerline...and although I may never build one that big...I find the info useful for a Idea I have for a Single-O show in that I can fit 2 of them on a Gooseneck.....Thanks Again.....Jim Zajicek
