From Bill Strong

CHIEF[1], originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

I probably sent this before, but in case I didn't. It is marked: The Lucky Bill & Honest Bill Combined Show, in Trenton Neb., on June 12, 1916. The elephants are Chief, Boston, & Trilby.
Bill

"Trilby" was a well known name in the early 1900''s due to the popularity of the book of the same name regarding a young lady hypnotically controlled by the evil "Svengali". Sort of an "X" Rated version of Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle.
I have nine Trilbys" in my files, in fact three of them were together on the Ringling Show in 1941, "Ringling Trilby", "Floto Trilby" and "Wallace Trilby".

Here is the info on the one listed above in Mr. Strong's picture:
GENTRY TRILBY
1902-13 Various Gentry Bros. Circus Units
1914-15 Wm. P. Hall Animal Farm
1916-19 Honest Bill Newton Show
(My notes indicate that all three of these elephants died the winter of 1919-20 as the result of a disease contracted while the Newtons were wintering in California.)

With three Trilbys at Ringling at one time, I'll bet this is where the studbook writer got lost on the details. He usually does a good job of questioning things but he screwed this one. I'll scold him when he calls for his annual check in. I figured there at least two, I knew of a Trilby that died in a flood on the Wallace show around 1913, but nine! Thanks for clearing this up.

As if that wasn't bad enough, they had 3 Babes, 3 Jennies, 2 Palms, 2 Modocs, 2 Ruths, 2 Jewels and 2 Lizzies.

Buckles and Joey,
God bless ISIS and other forms of "scientific" Studbook/record keeping. DNA is easier to back up then antidotes. Do you know how many tigers, both gold and white, there were that have been named Sheba. I have even seen the name spelled Sjiba, because of an accent. LOL
