Kelly-Miller Circus 2008 (From John Goodall)

HUGO, Okla. — Featuring an abundance of circus acts and performers but very few circus workers, Kelly-Miller Circus takes to the road March 15 on a 220-day adventure under the big top.

The circus will open its usual circuit in the Agriplex in Hugo, with two shows on March 15, then head to Idabel, Dallas, Fort Worth and then eastward to the east coast. “We visit 15 states on our route that takes us to the end of the season normally in the last week of October,” Kelly-Miller home office manager Jill Jones said. “We have plenty of performers, but we are still looking for more circus workers, and we have less than five weeks to find them before we go on the road.”

“Not a lot of Americans want to leave home and travel around the country with the circus for eight months,” said Jim Royal of Kelly-Miller. “It is a very serious concern for us, but we are trying different methods of recruiting now in hopes of getting more workers.”

The dilemma is that circuses, carnivals and fairs depend on foreign seasonal workers, and Congress has yet to pass the H2B exemption that would allow enough workers to come into the country on seasonal work passes.

Kelly-Miller has some new acts this year, including Casey McCoy’s tigers, and the Black Angels troup of acrobats from Kenya. The Black Angels are famous for limbo dancing and human pyramids.

This year, the circus will have Fridman Torales from Peru, who will walk upside down on the top of the tent during the show.

Sara Greene is a new trapeze artist from New Hampshire, who has spent a lot of time in Ireland.

Bareback riding returns to the circus this year on two big Belgian horses.

The circus is now in the process of putting on coats of new paint and making repairs to take the show on the road.

This year a new mechanics truck has been added and a mobile sleeper tour vehicle that sleeps 10 people.
Circus workers are redoing the seating area to make the box seats more friendly.

The seating area also will be more safe this year. Workers are changing the way the support rails at the end of the circus seats are made, moving the rails from a horizontal position to a vertical position to keep kids from climbing up and falling over.

The circus also has a newly renovated show mobile office.

Circus tickets should be in outlets sometime late next week for the shows in Hugo and Idabel.

Floating around town is the talk that the Kelly-Miller name was to be used for 2 years only.

This is just "talk" and I have no information from any of the principals.

How about this: John Ringling North II presents THE CIRCUS.

No royalties need be forwarded.

I'm sure WGB, my PAL!, will chime in on this.

Saraso La Te Da,
Don't come waltzing in here, hoping to get compted by your PALI, WGB. Fair weather friends!!!! I got all of them I need. Where were you when John Milton was ranging up on me!!!
Rumor, and this is rumor only, is the show will soon be called,
JRNII & WGB Combined Circus. Show me something of value, along the lines of PALI, and I'll see you get a pony ride on the house, and an introduction to Casey Canine when we are in your town.

Pretty sure there was some discussion of the title topic and how long it might remain on the show at the time of the sale. A quick check of trademarks suggests that should a title change actually be necessary in years to come, Cirque du Kirk Road is available, as is Circo Hugo
Espectacular. Perhaps Mr Burck with license the WGB title for indoor dates.

Ben & Casey(I been wanting to put those names together, without MD)
The 2 suggestions for names are priceless, and I came close to wetting my pants, which SMS said was all right, didn't he Casey?
Rest assured Ben, the WGB/indoor unit title will stay locked in my file, unless I get some reassurances that I don't have to drive or tour.
My best,
Wade Burck

Wade,
It's SMJ pal....and don't forget it.
Just hope some day you get to hear the words "do you know who I am!" from him, then you can break that one out.

S0 K-M is prepared to leave the barn, with some new acts and a refurbished mechanics truck and no Mexicans, so what else is new. During the 2nd world war all the shows went out did their season [bus. was great]. With very little help, but everyone joined in and it happened. I look to see that withy a help shortage they are going to have a time up and downing an arena twice a day. In the old mud show days the cage could be setup in the round end a forg0ot about until teardown. With the one ring European style tents that is not possible. Good luck.

Mr. Herriot,
I hear you on the up and down with the arena. Setting it once rather then twice would be nice. I get the feeling the show this year has enough people who are with it and for it, that even with the arena it will move smoothly, under the reins of Cap. John Ringling North.

Addendum: Typing error, Captain John Ringling North II at the the reins.

Also in reference to "the old mud show days" I believe back then it took more then one guy to carry each section of iron bar arena. I have been blessed with a Franzen arena that one man can carry two sections with ease.

Wade,
Does this count as intangibles?

I seem to remember in Detroit, in the 50's they would lay each section of the Beatty arena down & 4 men carried it.

Now here is a good chance for all you circus fans that have never traveled with a show for any length of time to go out and do some good. I have found that working on a show is a good way to get in shape and lose 10 or 15 pounds and have all the fun you can imagine. Heat, cold, rain, frost on the ground (and on the bigtop) and all the mud and deep water your mother never let you play in!

Has there been any further "advice" to JRN II not to use his own name on a circus, to avoid "future troubles"?Roger Smith
