Bowmanville Zoo #1 (From Bill Strong)

Hackenberger #1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Received this nice set of pictures of Mike Hackenberger's facility in Bowmanville, Ontario from Bill Strong.
Maybe Mike could put a time frame on this as well identify the elephants.

A little late this morning, a tap on the door at 5:50 and there stood Randy Peterson and Steve Flint, they had driven non-stop from Baraboo to Ruskin in 24 hours. After helping push about a foot of snow off the top of their car, we proceeded to Denny's for breakfast.

Awlful long way to drive just for breakfast. I guess dinner will be at the Florida Keys.

This series of pictures is from African Lion Safari, not the Bowmanville Zoo.

Buckles,
I believe this is at Lion Country Safari, where Charlie Grey is now at.

And for that your three pictures scheduled for tomorrow go into the trash can!

Buckles,
Wait, wait, wait. I wasn't insinuating that you didn't know that. I thought it was a contest, to see who was as wise and all knowing as you. I feel so stupid. Sorry.

Well, I'll think it over.
Anyway, I can't find the Turtle Benson pictures.

Daryl,
If you have any pictures on stand by, you better get a patch in quick. Don't use the contest deal. Use something else. The contest deal has already been used.
You were closer then me. It is called African Lion Safari, not Lion Country. A historic facility from the Chipperfied days of "zoo in a box", some assembly required. Mike had a great show and elephant program there before heading for Bowmanville. They also had a great falcon show headed by a chap from England. I have a couple of his hood's that he gave me.

This was stupid of me to forget to add that these are stamped on the back, March 1987, however the clothes tell me it hardly looks like March in Canada. They might have been taken the Summer before & just not developed till later.

Like Charlie Gray says, "Six months of good skiing then six months of bad skiing!"

Buckles,
If the Turtle Benson shot was meant to to be humbling, forget it. The blonde picture should be humiliating enough. I can't wait for "black rubber stable boots trying to imitate Clyde Canine", and "I have to wear my glasses in the ring, I'm blind without them Zajiceks" comments.

I once had a High Profile "Producer" Tell me I could'nt wear my Glasses in the Ring...I had to explain to Him that Eyesight was important, and that a person like myself Born with Bad Eyesight found it nothing SHORT of a miracle...That I could SEE 20/20 by simply putting on a pair of GLASSES!...And that he was the one that had A Major problem!!! And that it was TOO bad that HIS problem COULDNT be solved So easily! He never mentioned wearing Glasses again!......Jim Zajicek (correcting my deficencies with Technology)

Bird trainers know African Lion Safari in Cambridge as a place with a great bird show -- and oh ya, some elephants. Carol Precious is the head of the bird program.

A young girl from a farm down the road worked with the birds there. She went on to present a contract bird show at another park and met some circus people. Next thing you know she meets this guy with dogs and baboons. Now the first lady of Gibtown -- Judy Stevens.

J.Zajicek: I too only wear glasses to see where I'm going (can't see the big "E" on the eye chart). I tried working the sea lions without my glasses, like that would make a difference. If the animals didn't mess up it wasn't a problem but I couldn't see any fine looking damzooles in the audience.

Jim A,
Not wearing your glasses would be a great patch for a bad sealion show.
"They would have worked better if I hadn't been throwing the fish 10 feet over their head. Lol Zajieck patched it for years by saying "if it was good enough for Oscar Christiani, it's good enough for me".
You should have gotten tigers Jim. Didn't need to troll in the seats, they were waiting at the back door. If you were a female, they would have been fighting to help you load, and drive you to the next town.
Thanks for reminding me about their great bird show. I had forgotten. The fabulous show at Marineland and Game Farm, and the great show in Rockton, Circus World, St. Louis, etc. Those were the days, my friend.
Best wishes,
Wade Burck

Actually, Not Oscar, but rather George Burns was my inspiration....Fine ladies was a primary reason....However with "Gyp" in the act....Well, we all know the possibility's IF she knew I couldnt see ALL her antics..........Jim Zajicek
