Buckles 1947

Dear Buckles: I remember you. You were a young boy on the Cole Show in 1947. You were playing on the trampoline with some of the Cristianis, I believe. You bounced off and hit your chin and teeth on the rail of the trampoline. Do you remember? My husband, Frank "Dutch" Wise, boss ticket seller, and I met with Bill and your mother in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Your father was alway a gentleman. Everyone respected him. I was Maggie Wise, now 84, now Maggie Wise Riley and a widow again. Been writing a book for about 10 years, "The Ballet Broad." I have thought of you several times through the years. I'll sign off. Enough for now. But p.s. I starred in a movie "Assisted Living," in case you're interested. Elliot Greenebaum director, Michael Bonsignore, co-star. You can find it on computer if you're interested. Best wishes and happy new year.
Maggie

I Googled up "Assisted Living" and it looks quite interesting. It is described as being done in Documentary style.

Buckles, Father Hogan has some film of the Ringling show performed at St Martha's Church in the '30s along with the Blessing of the Train. It will be shown at the Showfolks of Sarasota Club house Thursday, January 10 at 6:30PM. Any one interested is invited.

I have seen that film and it's great. Included is Walter McLain working the center ring eight elephants.
I'm a little bit leery of train blessings tho, having seen the GSOE movie so many times.

Speaking of blessings: I remember one time when John Pugh had this beautiful BRAND NEW white canvas Big Top and someone arranged for the local priest to come and bless it before raising it (I suspected it was more for the publicity than the blessing).

I don't know what the rule is but apparently one cannot bless a Big Top from just any position; it was decided that the priest and a gaggle of press and TV people would have to walk on this new canvas out to the first center pole for the blessing to be effective.

I remember Pugh saying, "Follow me" and leading probably a dozen people out on the top.

Charlie Rex commented to Dave Hoover, "Boy, you will NEVER see me invite anyone to walk on any Big Top of MINE!"

Buckles,
You hit your chin and teeth on the frame of the trampoline? Was that the "proferbial" defining moment when you chose the path of elephant training, over that of an acrobat?

The new Beatty-Cole was put in the air in the mid 80's and I think it was in Nashville. At one time I had some photos, but I sold them as most of them didn't interest me.
