Looks like it may have started out as a horse walker before the baskets where added for the kids.

A couple years ago I saw one of those hand cranked swings still going strong set up next to a little marketplace in Trujillo, Honduras. I remember thinking at the time, "This guy needs a bounce, because that's a tough way to make a living."

I'll "me too" when I first saw the base I thought "horse walker" before I read "merry-go-round" and looked at the swings.

Wouldn't use know it. YouTube has video of one of these things in operation in Africa.

When I mentioned the one in Trujillo, Honduras I left out the memorable part of the story. There was a hotelito across the street with a balcony and two kids on the balcony with a BB pistol who would take potshots at the empty swings when the guy was working the crank. Every once and awhile I would hear a "plink" when they actually hit something and then I'd have to decide if I was in the line of fire. A wise businessman, the operator was set up on the side of the mercado next to the only running water source in the neighborhood, a spigot where moms sent the kids to fill buckets to bring back home. I imagine many of the centavos earned touting water paid for rides.
