Manhattan Rockettes #1

Scan000010582, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

We had a wonderful time last evening at the touring Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show. I had received an eMail from Brian Liddicoat, another Big Apple Circus alumnus, who is now director of these touring units. He mentioned that one of his daughters, Gabrielle, was Production Asst. with the one appearing here in Tampa and invited us to be her guests.
How nice to see an American Institution that constantly maintains the same high standards yet finds it unnecessary to have to "eliminate the ring curbs".
Needless to say, the grandkids were completely captivated.

The Rockettes were originally titled The St. Louis Rockets, if I remember correctly.

Yes, an institution in NYC that sells out consistently---and to jaded New Yorkers.

To top the cake, they do 6 shows a day during their peak periods.

Years ago there was a NYC rule that animals cannot be stabled in the theatre overnight. The animals had to vacate Radio City Music Hall after the last show.

Thank God the Felds don't control Radio City Music Hall; the first thing they'd do is change the name to "The iPod Center for Performing Arts". Their thinking is that RADIO is too old-fashioned.

The Felds 2 & 3 (generations) forgot that "the great white father" Irvin made so much money with the traditional RBBB that they are still counting the money.

From Eric:

Does the Rockettes' music still include "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers?"

It certainly does and I am led to believe that it hasn't changed a step since it's debut in 1933.

back in the 90s i ended with a gig every year in Radio city then Shawn alias (dog )and i were there . Ocasionaly Chico would come to visit when he was in the Big Apple Circus and the last time i saw Walter Logan was when he stop by . at that time Dog and I and crew lived in the building with all the animals . we were working for Dawn animal agency .there is a book about life in Radio city name Safe in The Spotlight a few pics of us working there .after i left after 8 yrs Shawn stayed and ended being temporaily part of owners family if i am not mistaken with Bambi and the rumor was he had to become a vegitarian to be part of the family . those were the days in Rocket city with the huffers and puffers thats what Shawn and i name the Rockets because at the end of each show they be huffing and puffying . sometimes we did 8 shows a day and we excersise the animals in stage between shows or in the moring take them out on the street for a walk around the building .definatly a American icon till the Japanese came and bought it then rumor was that it was sold again to a U S corporation maybe i am not sure who has it now .also heard during the war years Mac McDonald had his elephants there . Hello from Manhattan!!
I saw the spectacular NEW Radio City Music Hall 75th Anniversary Christmas show last Wed.!!
The Christmas show has needed an overhaul for several years
and WOW.. what a beauty this new show is. (As well as the Music Hall being one of the most beautiful theaters in the world.)
Yep.. the "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" (costumes by Vincente Minelli and choreographed by Russel Market) is still intact (except an elf.. rather than Santa supplies the big pillow).
The story line has changed completely.
For me the highlight was when the complete stage is dark - with stars in the background..Santa and two boys "fly" around the stage amidst falling snow..and then snow starts to fall in the auditorium itself!!!
The main change is the use of a gigantic LED screen as a moving-image backdrop. Incredible.
The Rockettes all say Hello!!
If you're going to be in the area... don't miss it!!
(Yes.. Dawn Animal Agency still supplies the animals..or so the program states.)

And.. Happy Holidays to All!
