This same photo appears in Gil's book, facing page 112, where it's slightly cropped. The mirror was presumably to provide a view of the "fast hands" of the ticket seller and the change that he made, since the counter was above the heads of the buyers. If the photo is correctly identified, it's the vehicle that Gil occupied during a RR wreck near Bridgeport in early July 1872. He relates the episode in his book. Someone usually slept in the ticket wagon to guard the cash. The wagon broke open during the incident, revealing a barely clothed Gil to gawkers. This is a great example of early overland wagon decoration, showing the applied scrolls and paint details. The clerestory roof is also an innovation. They also provided a bit of a drop bottom for leg comfort.
