On the subject of pigmy elephants.

Great minds must travel along the same channels. This article out of this mornings Sunday paper. One portion reads:
"Adult pygmy elephants stand up to 8 feet tall, a foot or two shorter than mainland Asian elephants. They are more rotund and have smaller babyish faces and with longer tails that reach almost to the ground. They are also less aggressive than their Asian counterparts."

"I can't help but think that "pygmy" might be a bad choice of words. "Anna May" was exactly 8 feet tall and about average size. The Benedict Study of the 34 elephants carried on the Ringling Show in 1935 states that only one exceeded 8 feet (Barnum Lizzie) at 8'2".

I often hear researchers who should know better, state that elephants keep growing their whole lives. I measured “Bertha” every year for sixteen years and found no evidence at all to support that conclusion.
Why is the notion of continuous growth is so easily accepted when no other mammal keeps growing all their life?

I rently read about a "very small" performing Asian elephant, the only detail provided was that his trunk was three-feet long.

I assume this was a juvenile: can you suggest how tall, and how old he might be?
