To Barbara Durtche

To Barbara Durtche, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Other than a few railroad cars and wagons that had once been on the Ringling Show, there was nothing of Historical significance at the Park when I was there.
The picture above is an artist's conception of what the park would look like when completed but it never got completed. We opened with a "Reception Center" featuring the IMAX Theater that explained the wonders you would see if you came back in a couple of years. We presented our acts in the hot Florida sun.
The park would close from time to time while additions were added and we finally got an indoor arena that allowed us to present a regular circus performance.
You are right, Chappie was swept up in Mr. Feld's enthusiasm, as were we all, in fact he was quoted in saying, "I am through recording History, from now on I will be making it!"
We fell under the directorship of an endless assortment of young Disney type people that would come and go.
I well remember the day the end came, Chappie called for a meeting with the park management and had Lloyd Morgan, Jack Joyce and myself accompany him.
He explained in great detail his plans for an ongoing street parade, pointing out his past experiences in Baraboo and Milwaukee, his access to parade vehicles, draft stock and knowledge of the logistics involved. He elaborated on Mr. Joyce's experience with lead stock, horses and as a parade marshal and the fact that we had twenty elephants on hand and finally Mr. Morgan's accessibility to transportation to move all this stuff. The plan was to parade every major city in Central Florida over a period of time.
After he had concluded he asked "Well, what do you think?" and this kid that looked to be a college Freshman replied, "Chappie, I don't think I want to mess with it" and that was that.
I must say tho, Chappie was one of the few people the Felds showed much loyalty to. He was retained as "Circus Historian" until he finally threw in the towel and returned to Baraboo. The only person I ever knew that retired and went north.

Capt, that is the first picture that has your comments under it that can be read once it is blown up larger! Can the Shaz make that happen from now on? I really miss reading all the comments you make about each photo! Thanks, Gary

The land is now Posner Park, a bare piece of land with a few new streets going through it. The big news is that it will soon have a Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, Michael's, and other stores alongs with offices and condos. Probably the only reminder of Circus World is a plaque at the Shell Station across US 27 recoginizing "Circus World Shell".

I read all the memories of the group that worked there. Must have been something special.

Great.

The world needs another Target, Dick's Sporting Goods and Shell Station like it needs another infuenza epidemic.

It was very poorly planned and executed but the people who worked there made Circus World a very special place indeed.

I might think ( now )this place might have been more Successful had it been Situated East of Orlando rather than to the West ?

Bud: I don't know if another location would have been better for Circus World. There are a lot of parks around the area that aren't doing that well if the figures in the business section are correct. Disney is definately the the "800 lbs. gorilla" in the area. Animal Kingdom is the least attended park (meaning close to 9 million a year) but that's double what Sea World does. Universal's slipping a little while Disney's going up. Perhaps if Feld could have justified the Park as a real winter quarters and used it for other business operations, and Circus World broke even, maybe that would have made business sense. We'll never know.

Was the Shell Station the same truck stop where we took the bulls to be weighed?

I'm with Jim, if it had become a real, viable Winter Quarters it would have made sense.

There is STILL no reason why a Ringling Winter Quarters (and permanent production) couldn't be incorporated into one of the existing parks in Orlando.

There is already a Disney/Feld partnership with the ice shows...you'd thnk with the Dumbo story/connection (no pun intended...)that Disney could make something more of that...but then again, someone would have to "give-up" something...

Cindy; The Shell station isn't the truck stop. My guess is that would have been down the highway about a block. There's a restaurant in the area, The Pub, that was probably the ledgendary Howard Johnson's.

Some plaques in the Shell station refer to days when it was a Texaco station -- I might have the wrong brand for the time. They also were called Baseball City Shell (or Texaco). The plaques would probably do OK on Ebay.

The Pub was a Denny's resturant. The HoJo's Jim is refering to is now a Quality in and what was the Holiday Inn across the street is now a time share resort. Lots of good times at the bar at the Howard Johnsons had by all. This park was a little early for the area, but would have worked out great as a combination of park and winter quarters. The truck stop is long gone and a chinese buffet now occupies the location.

from day one, i spent nearly two years, there as pr dir. and it was great fun--we thought it would go and maybe it would have if circus owners Mattel and its Gulf Oil partners hadn't run dry of money--anyway, going to work every day with Buckles and Chappie was something to savor and remember; of course the circus folks and the theme park folks were totally different species--one never really "getting" the other; hard to believe it's been over 30 years!

I don't mean to be morbid, but I wonder what they thought if anyone accidently disturbed Marcella's remains out back behind CW?

HOJO's was the Offical Bar of CW personal. It was too bad they never built the giant Elephant Hotel or whatever it was going to be? Also too bad Kenny Poo, as Jewell New referred to him didn't move Winter Quarters there too, but what they don't have a WQ anymore correct?

When I was a kid working at Jungle Larry's in Naples, I'd drive up to Circus World in my old 1970 beater Chevy van to visit. I thought it was the greatest place in the world. I think I still have a drinking glass and a keychain I bought in the souvenir shop. It's a shame it closed.

(If you don't know what a 'beater Chevy van' is, you're too young to be reading this blog. :-)

I agree with Darryl and Gary, the HO JO's was our place to be! Soon as everyone got off shift or work, there they would head. Many deals and romances were started and stopped there. LOL
I feel like the land that CW was on (oh, blow it out..Posner Park!) is holy ground to some of us who had the wonderful opportunity to work there and be a part of the Circus as it was. This is the place where I met Ben Williams, Barbara, Buckles, the kids and many of the great guys that worked for Buckles. Would not have traded it for the world. Funny, that after 30 years, people around here, like our server at yet another new place to eat..that is about 1 mile south of the old park, are still talking about CW and figuring that it was just "ahead of it's time" and I have to agree.

How true Karen! Thats where we met, seems so long ago sometimes. My wife complains about my dreams that I still say "Move up!" in my sleep!

My son played at the next park Baseball and Broadway or visa versa with his high school band and came home with an a reaction to the mildew at every motel they stayed at.

I never got a reaction from Moodew, but George kept me on my toes.

Little John, where have you been boy? Glad you're back, now if we can only get the Dutchess back online? LOL, sorry Wade?

Going to try this post again, Capt? Hey Little John, glad to see ya back, where ya been?

I think we need to have a CW reunion as alot of the old staff are still in the area and it would be a blast. It may have to go on for several days as there would be alot of jackpots to let fly.

I looked far and wide and finally found this:

Mike Aston wrote a song something like this:

Intro ***

G E A D G
Two times a day, three times on Saturday we go into our Circus World.
E A D
We’ve got all kinds of women, all kinds of clowns, and all kinds of pretty girls.
C G D G
We got Big Jim Darra, and Billy Scadlock, and don’t forget Gina Sue.
C G D G
We got Barry, and Brian, and Little John; we got Miss Haines City too.

E A D G
*** Doot Do Do -- Do Do Do -- de Doot Do Do - Do Do Do.

Every day ‘bout 7 o’clock we all get to go back home.
Some of us got a pretty little lady, and some go home alone;
But then every night ‘bout eight o’ five we head out the Howard Jay’s
We tell Miss Penny all of our problems and she makes us feel OK.
