Found this photo I took at the Bronx Zoo in 1990. I noticed a sign stating "Hairy Rhino". I could not believe it and went right over, sure enough there she (Repunzel) was.

I was in awe looking at one of the most endangered mammals on earth. Seems this one was captured in Sumatra.....and sent to the Cincinnati Zoo.....where she and another female with a male have produced offspring.

You can read much more by entering Bronx Zoo Hairy Rhino into Google Search.

Does everybody remember the story of Rapunzel from your childhoods?

She was the girl with the long hair- so long that the prince (the dog) climbed it up to her bedroom in the tower.

I think it was supposed to go " he climbed up her hair and RESCUED her"

Your mother must have dubbed that part in.

My dad read it to me from the original translation.

Either way I'm disappointed to learn the prince was a dog. Figures.

Richard Reynolds says - -

These comments are way off the business of Sumatran rhinos. Female Repunzel(named after the Brothers Grimm heroin)was was discovered to be too old to breed. I saw her when she was at Cincinnati for a while. She eventually went back to Bronx zoo where she developed blindness and was euthanized in Dec. 2005. She was thought to be over 30.

Four zoos formed a consortium to import pairs of Sumatran rhinos in the 1980s. They were - - Bronx, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati. The experiment was hugely expensive. All but Bronx got pairs - -it got Repunzel, pictured here. The mortality was terrible. All died rather quickly save Repunzel and a young pair that was eventually put together at Cincinnati. Finally after many heartbreak efforts to breed them the trick was turned. Cincy has now produced three healthy calves, a real conservation triumph.
