Carson & Barnes 1981 #1 (From Hal Guyon)

C&B-1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Buckles, Here are some shots of Carson & Barnes taken by me on October 13, 1981 in York S.C. This was a very inpressive show that year I have notes on the show but will have to find them and will pass them on. There are 43 shots so it may take a while to download, but I think you will enjoy them. Bob Cline and I are getting together this weekend, and I will burn a C D of these for him.

The first year we saw this show was in 1975. Bobby Gibbs told my dad that since we were heading to MN we should stop by. We got there in the morning I remember walking through the menagerie and seeing the baby elephants all lined up and it blew my dad away. My dad found DR leaning against a quarter pole in the tent and asked if we could park on the lot----we stayed for a week. We had a wonderful time visiting and my sister and I got to be in spec (I was 8 and Susan was 4). Barbara was pregnant with Kristin at the time. We were with the show during the summer of 76. It was a bicentennial theme spec and they had four sets of three baby elephants in spec. My sister and I took turns and rode "Obert" in spec with Terry Finney leading him. It was "Obert", "Kelly" and "Traci". That was the beginning of a long friendship with the Miller and Byrd families.
I have seen their show almost every year since. In the summer we always would spend at least two weeks visiting before heading off to vacation in the National Parks. A big thing was to make it back in August to Sheboygan, WI with the grass lot on the lake with the brat cookout. We spent Christmas of 1980 in Hugo and it was on new year's day in 1981 that the Rhino was delivered by Gopher Davenport.
Each morning I would try to go into the tent and watch the elephants pull the quarter poles, and each night I would watch them fold the tent (it is still my thing to do when I visit the show) I also use to sit at the back door with DR and watch the show.
Two years ago my parents were on there and I visited in Ohio. Now with a daughter of my own I still got to do spec but this time with her on the elephant with me.
Seeing these old pictures and talking about people that are now gone brings back strong good memories and it makes me want to go see them today--seeing that show feels like going home.

I know what you mean Maria, about this series of photos making you feel like going home. If the show made this big of an impression on those visiting, you can imagine what it's done for those of us who lived it day after day, season after season. I still miss it. Except when it's 9:30 and now I can just go to sleep. :-)

Hello Mr. Perry in Australia,

It's me, Patricia White, p. white, I'm just older- but not former- yet! I've been working cats all along, and I'm in Japan now working for Jim Clubb.

I can't believe you remember that western style belt buckle! I did that in 1991, the year after I left Carson and Barnes. They were hot-cast bronze, with a tiger and a tent if I remember right. I sold about 100.

A few months later I did a sculpture I called "Celestial Circus" A little tent at the base with a 'ribbon' with roses coming out the back door, rising up in a spiral. Animals were all along the ribbon. An elephant, liberty horse, camel, zebra, lion, giraffe and tiger at the top. It was about 17 inches high.

I sold ten of those, but they were so expensive to cast I had to charge more than I wanted. But it was fun to do. I don't even have one myself. I know Bill Biggerstaff has one, Jim Judkins, Barbara and Geary Byrd ( a gift to D.R. and Isla Miller) and a few other people.

When I sculpted it, I'd only worked elephants, lions, tigers and liberty horses. With my current job, now I can add the zebra and giraffe. Wonder if I'll ever work camels full time in the ring?

Thanks, Mr. Perry for remembering!

Pat White - I wonder if you remember me. My writing partner and I wrote an article for Oklahoma Today magazine about Carson and Barnes, and I wrote a sidebar feature on you (still one of the better things I've ever written, I think). You and I corresponded for awhile after that and I brought my kids to see the show when it came close to Tulsa. My younger daughter, Ariel, then about 4, just fell in love with you and cried to go see you for the next several days. I remember that you wrote that she and Nick could be in the first animal training school class of 2004 ...or some such date which sounded impossibly far off then - I'm going to guess that "then" was early to mid-80s. I've often wondered what happened to you over the years and am not surprised to hear that you're still working with animals.
