For those interested in more information on William F. Cody, go to:

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming is a five wing, world class museum. Having lived in Cody, I've been there many times. If you travel toward Yellowstone Park it's definately worth a visit. Buffalo Bill acquired his nickname in the 1860's while supplying meat for the Kansas railroad builders. Pay stubs in the museum reveal Sitting Bull was paid very well while travelling with the Wild West show.
Buffalo Bill also had his Wild West Show at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. However, the organizers thought it was low class and wouldnt let him book in! SO.. he rented a lot across the street and opened up before the fair was even ready! He cleaned up, and word traveled that his show was a must SEE when going to the FAIR. Even Dignitary's going to the fair made it a point to stop in, comped of course, which in turn gave him great press. The best part was he didnt have to pay a burr to the Fair, He kept it all except for his arrangement with the lot owner. To me thats what made him a Showman to admire. source: Devil in the White City.
