Harlengen, Texas 1966

We were showing down in the Valley with the Polack Show when to my surprise, one morning Gene Gardner showed up.
He had come up from Circo Bells to check out an elephant that had been stranded on the border. Seems that earlier in the year Tony Diano had sold two elephants, "Katie" and "Betty" to a Mexican Circus. He had his groundskeeper "Charlie" drive them down to the border and made a deal with "Streamline" Frizzel to unload them.
This "Betty" had already hurt several people and in the process of being unloaded, got Streamline down and kicked him around a bit. The final outcome was, "Katie" went to Mexico and "Betty" was taken to a Sale Barn outside of town and left there.
After hearing the details I decided to go along with Gene, out of curiosity and also to help should any problem develop. Here we are at the site before moving her around and cleaning out her pen, everything went well and Gene made a deal for her purchase.
Unfortunately before he could get back with a truck, someone who had seen us in the pen, tried the same thing and got seriously injured, the Police then shot her.

Gene was a wonderful human being to all who knew him. Human and animals alike. There was nothing this man could or would not do. JC once told me he would love to have Gene work for him. I have never met anyone that did not admire this man. Very easy to look at too. Never any ego problem. He just wanted to be circus and did a darn great job of it. Mexico was very lucky to have him in their country. I miss him.
