From B.J. #2

"I remember this building. In the 1950's the Masonic Temple in Hugo burned down and Terrell Jacobs came up with the idea of doing two benefit performances with the proceeds going to build a new facility.
D.R. Miller squared this Armory away and everyone pitched in, something like theShowfolks Circus. It was a great success." Buckles

We'll never see a great elephant display again like the last series of photos. BUT..in 1979 did you ever think show trucks would have their web site address painted on the side?

Bob Rawls would have gotten this done a lot faster if BJ and I hadn't badgered him every day he was there. He shared that he remembered going to the armory as a kid when the place was used as a skating rink. (Strangely, he said there wasn't much for kids to do back then in Hugo...some things never change.) When Harry and Mary Rawls showed up to check his progress, they asked him if he remembered performing in the building when he was a kid. As Mary listed the acts he did, Bob showed no desire to discuss the issue and brushed off the topic saying, "Yes, Mom, I remember." That may have been a different show, but do you have any other memories of the show you mentioned, Buckles? It's got to be one of very few Showfolks-type events the Hugo circus community has had.

Oddly enough, the only two acts I remember are my folks working our three elephants and Cap Jacobs cat act which was quite a production getting squeezed into that small building.
Some show provided the seats but I don't recall who. Maybe Herb Walters.

has there ever been a railroad show based in Hugo?

No but it might not be a bad idea.
Today's Ken & Nicole Show could easily fit into the Armory.

I remember that event..My brother Mike Moore and I performed with our dear "Mabel" We were VERY young and excited to be in front of all our Hugo friends.Mike swung the bull hook a little wildly and hit me on the forehead...a little blood added to the drama. I am now living in Australia, and I was pleased to discover your blog.would love to hear from you all of that era...
