Isn't Sheba the one who went through some sort of "sex change" in mid-life?

I never heard that but I do recall that Sheba died in Hugo during the days Mr. Jacobs with Kelly-Miller.
Some time later a party headed toward Peru was asked to bring her along.

After a search, sure enough her carcass had been sealed in a metal box.
I heard this story well after the fact, I may have been away in the Army at the time, so I don't know what the final outcome was but in loading the casket for the trip a seam cracked open and she was pretty ripe.

As she got older Sheba did grow somewhat of a mane. I wonder if this would be common with older female lions.

I saw a lioness belonging to Tarzan Zerbini that had the beginning of a mane. She looked like an 18 to 24 month old male. She was said to be 27 years old. Manes are a secondary sexual trait. What that relates to is the more testosterone the bigger the mane.So an old female that is depleted of estrogen would have an elevated testosterone level, resulting in the beginnings of a mane.Just like some older women will get facial hair.
And on a similar note, Male gorilas have white hairs on their backs (silverbacks) as a secondary sexual trait. I would like to see research relating mane hairs per square inch to testosterone levels. Also white hairs per square inch on gorilas related to testosterone levels.
Dr. Mitch Busch, Director emeritus of the National Zoo assisted by Dr. Phillips, formerly of Dallas,Tx. went to Africa to study Male lions in the wild to publish testosterone level standards.Previously unknown.
Dr. Busch told me that males testosterone levels, thus their viability as breeders, could be judged the same as breeding bulls are valued,by measuring the circumference of their testicles. It's very simple, the larger the testicles, the higher the testosterone levels. Thus resulting in the saying that men who commit unusually brave actions have "big ones".

Also if you castrate a male lion, no matter how large the mane, 6 to 12 months later they will have no mane at all, looking like very large females with large "jug" heads

Just like married men, they lose more then their hair.

Superb comments from Larry Allen Dean, needing little expansion. Dead on information, and no better place to post it.

There was extraordinary interest in Sheba when she began to reveal what was described as suppressed hermophroditic features coming to the fore. The coverage was extensive, and many have read it.

I'm scanning to Buckles 4 photos of Sheba's funeral. However she or he departed this life, the body was put into an long oval-shaped wash tub with, forgive me, a lid that looked like the peeling back of a sardine can,and was described by Buckle's father as having been "whomped up" by some guy at Jacobs's winterquarters. If I scan successfully, they'll come through to Buckles. If not, I'll get them copied and send them snail mail. I think everyone would enjoy seeing the fitting send-off Sheba received.

Capt. Jacobs wrote to Dr. Mann, director of the National Zoo, in DC, on 23 February 1953, that Sheba had been born 18 years earlier, on Sept. 5th, at George Vierheller's zoo, in St. Louis. He played the New York State Fair on her birthday, and he wrote, "There and then, a mane started growing. Today, she is the most beautiful looking male lion you ever saw. Has developed a beautiful mane greater than any I have in my group...It is the most astonishing thing I've seen in my life...contrary to Miss Jorgensen, done without the aid of medics." Here, he was referring to the first world-sensationalized sex change recipient of the '50s, Christine Jorgensen.
