This is for Harry Kingston (or anyone who else with the answer). In what year(s) was Shorty Sherrer on Carson & Barnes with his genuine gorilla?- -And For how long did Sherrer have it? - -I assume it was on other shows as well. Does anyone have a photo of the gorilla? - - or the pit show for that matter. |

I think there is some of miscommunication here.
I knew Mr. Shearer well during the days when his brother Norman and I were candy butchers on the Kelly-Miller Show and I am unaware that either he or anyone else around that operation, had a living gorilla.
I recall that "Oklahoma" Shorty Shearer did have a pit show (snakes? or an alleged gorilla) on K-M in the mid '60s and maybe with Jack Moore in the late '60s or D.R. in the '70s. Shorty also had the "wild west aftershow" on K-M.
Buckles I hate to get into anything as I am no where near the circus experts like you and John but Shorty Shearer did have a real live goooorilla.
I wrote to them for Richard and got him the name of it that took 8 or more months to get the info. Bulah answered me with the info wheich i passed on to Richard and said Shorty cried like a baby when it died. He got in the cage with it and man I was scared as hell when I was locked in the semi with all the glass off.
Richard, I know it was the 70's to early 80's.
I will look for the photos as it was in a semi with 4 by 8 foot wood painted boards that were hung on the ouside of the trailer. This really saved Shorty one day as the
someone tipped off the cops and they held the whole show up getting into town but shorty got through as his show looked like a regular semi. I think it all was painted a lite green.
I still state it was a real live gooorilla as shorty and Bulah told me so and if it was not it was the biggest damn varmit I ever saw.
Please do not throw me off the blog for this but I saw it.
Harry Kingston
