After attending the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for many years (both as a child and as a parent), I was extremely disappointed with the quality of this year's event at the RBC Center in Raleigh. What used to be truly awesome, spectacular and memorable is now merely a techno-laden bore. No more parades with animals of every description, unicyclists and walkers on tightropes, or trapeze performers with daredevil artistry. No more thrilling acrobatic acts. Now it is one ring with dogs catching frisbees, a giant video screen with animated talking elephants, clowns having food fights and cats and birds balancing on a wire. Even the live band has been replaced with recorded music. In the two-hour show that cost us an average of $30, there were perhaps two really good stunts. I'm glad I was part of a generation to experience a really great circus, before it became the Greatest Flop in Town that it was this time around. Suzanne Kelly Apex |
