When Castle bought the Ed Weidaman elephants, Zetta, Peggy and Dorothy, Dorothy was tough and only Bert could get around her. Believe Castle got rid of her. She made Bert's life miserable. Wonder what happened to her? Maybe D.R.
At the time frame of the Dorothy with Castle there was another Dorothy that had been one of the James M. Cole elephants that did go to Hugo and D.R. Also tough and I believe she downed Shipley while there. Their was an expression that rated elephants that had a serious behavior problem. Not too many but those that indeed warranted it were known among elephant guys as "A double tough Son of A Bitch"
Dorothy was at World of Animals in Mesquite, I'm pretty sure. I wasn't working with the elephants yet but I heard stories from the guys that worked them and they said she was Tough! They shipped her out sometime after , she didn't stay long.
Yes, that James M. Cole "Dorothy" was pretty grumpy. After having been briefly with Hagen Bros. Circus and injuring several people in 1958, she was given to Jack Moore (Carson & Barnes) and delivered to Hugo prior to that show's opening in 1959. Kelly-Miller was already on the road and we were out in Calif. with Rudy Bros. so Shipley was all alone. After kicking Shipley around she was graciously donated to the Tulsa Zoo.
I can't for the life of of me remember the date or even the decade. I got a call from the Miami Zoo offering to give me "Zetta" and since this was within my price range, I drove down and picked her up. I made a huge mistake in judging her age, she was well past the point of going on the road. I had her, maybe a week and then found a place for her at an Animal Farm up in Waldo, FL. Christ, I can't even remember those people's name. Anyway Jim Elliott and I took her up and I learned later that she died not too long afterward.
Wait a minute! On the way back from the Grocery Store just now, I remembered that it was Elliott and Ted Svertesky and maybe even Ben that drove "Zetta" up to Waldo for me. As I now recall, Ted had set up the deal since he lived up in that area. Maybe Jim can explain it better. By the the way, her name was actually "Arzetta" Ed Widaman having named her after his wife.
Buckles, I stumbled across a newspaper article on the internet tonight. The couple's name was Gene and Rusti Schuler and they ran the Waldo Wild Animal Retirement Village. The article mentioned that Zetta pushed their car off of Hwy. 301 in 1989. Maybe that helps with the time frame. Bob
Buckles The Castle show Dorothy was most definately retired at the then Mesquite animal park. I went with Gibbs to see her right after we heard she became a resident there. Bobby told me that she died there a year or so later.
I'm pretty sure the late 80's is the right time frame for this as I was working with Dave Mannis and Gary Jacobson at Houser's House of Horrors in Melbourne. The Shuler's is also were the Antalek Chimps went as well. They didn't stay there either as there was alot of controversey about them going there.

Buckles, is this the Freida that would have been on the Hagen show then Sells Bros/Little Bob's show?
Yes it is.
She was purchased in 1933 from the LaMont Show.
Is this the same Freida that Burt had on Castle--the one who Burt said was especially dangerous?
With Castle, Bert had something like "Zetta", "Peggy", "Jan", "Bunny" and "Marie".
mr. Woodcock, going off the names, were the elephants Bert had on Castle later sold to Tarzan Zerbini?

Dorothy want to a Safari Park in Dallas in 1972. Maybe Gary Hill knows something about her.
Yes, Castle's elephants eventually went to Tarzan Zerbini.

What happened to Zetta? I have nothing on her after 1973.

Was the car pushed off the highway to help or harm?
A very Personal Motor Vehicle Assistance program in the wilds of Florida.
