The Cole show opened with both acts and both trainers were well received by the public. Although Beatty's name was better known, the show did give considerable publicity to King, featuring him on lithographs and the like. Here is a Walter Tyson pic of a flat car showing both trainers' names.
Cole opened on thirty-five cars and the nut was pretty steep. By midseason the show found itself too heavy in more ways than one and the decision was made to drop five cars of equipment and to eliminate the wild animal act of Allen King.
The former Bays Bros Circus owned by Fred Bays was reorganized as Rice Bros with Ray Marsh Bryden coming in as a partner. They hired Allen King, leased his act and three elephants from the Cole show and opened in August. Bryden soon bought out Bays' interest and the show made the season. |
