Allen King joined out on Al. G. Barnes, in Dallas, Texas, in 1922, at age 25. He had almost no experience, but got seasoned rather quickly. Louis Roth was teaching him an act of 12 lionesses when the cage erupted in a hey-rube. Roth was getting the worst of it, when King entered the cage and fought alongside him in a protracted brawl that provided King his baptism-by-fire.
Look for the brief but excellent Homer C. Walton article on King and his short-lived 1942 King Bros. Circus in the Nov.-Dec. 1963 BANDWAGON.
