Buckles,When I met Albert Rix, many years ago, he mentioned that he had once had a very large bear act (might have been polar bears... not sure) but that he was surrounded by 4 bears who acted as body guards. My question is do you have any photos of this act? Thanks, Mark Rosenthal
Mr. Rix life would make a remarkable movie. His early years in the Hagenbeck Zoo, his service in the German Army, his capture by the Russians during the retreat from Stalingrad, his tenure in a Concentration Camp (he managed to stay alive by eating the bugs and worms he head seen the bears dig up, so much so that he was once accused of collaboration by fellow prisoners), his disenchantment on his return home to find the same people running things that instigated the war, his refusal to return to the family business and his eventual decision to come to the U.S. I don't know if the act you refer to would be something in Europe, with Ringling or later. Maybe Jeanette Rix could elaborate on this. Buckles (Wayne Jackson photo)

Bears have always fasannated me. My spelling is no better at 3 am. So many performers have a life beyond belief to the real world. This man should have a movie written about him. These people who work with polar bears are really a breed apart.
The kindest, most gental man I've ever known.
to 24 hour man in my humble opinion i would go as far as to say the whole Rix family are the kindest and down to earth people any one would like to meet . cleanraul
