From Lee Sambrook #1

Hello Mr .Woodcock ,
My name is Lee Sambrook . I am the head keeper of elephants at the whipsnade wild animal park , England .
I have attached a couple of pictures of bulls from two circuses . The first picture is "Bobby" . He was with the Bailey Fosset circus in the U.K . The other is a bull named "Shenka" , who as you know was with circus Alberti , Italy?.
I hope you are able to put them onto your website .
Can I just finish by adding that me and the guys in the barn love the website .
Yours sincerely
Lee Sambrook

If my comments start appearing in German its because I am trying to send a picture. You think my spelling is bad!!!! My computer knowledge will give Shannon grey hair years before his time.

Hi,

Would you have any photographs of an elephant named"Big Charlie"?
I believe he died in a amusement park there in Britain around the late 1950's.
Reporly it had been one of the largest elephants in captivity.

Lee, thanks for photos of these tow big tuskers. Great ivory. When was the photo of "Bobby" taken and any idea of his age?

Reminds me of Zerbini's Luke, with the tusks that head south

You are not the only BARN that loves the site!

Why is it that bull elephants seem more commen in Europe than in the US I can only think of 7 in america Carden's Bo, Tarzan Zerbini's Luke, Cuneo's Nic, Doug Terranova's Moxie, Doc nd Gunther of Kenneth Feld's and Carson and Barnes Obert. ANy I missed?

As mentioned in the text, a good many of these European males are no longer livng.
Here in the States there are at least six Asian male elephants at the Ringling Stud Farm alone, all of the "Wooly Mammoth" variety, several in excess of 12,000 lbs.
What is rare tho, are males with a heavy brace of ivory. I am told that the tuskers in the wild fall prey to poachers, reducing the Gene Pool.

Only two asian bulls (both big tuskers) are still on tour in Europe, both in german circusses - Colonel Joe with Circus Krone, and Shenka with Circus Alberti. All others died or became too dangerous for travelling. Sahib for example was given to a zoo after he attacked a keeper. However since he was very agressive to females he was euthanized later (in another zoo).

Dear Anonymous,
Bucky Steele had a male named Buke that bred the Carson and Barnes offspring. Carson & Barnes currently has two males in their breeding facility named Tommy and Colonel with Colonel having two females pregnant. Obert is the baby of the three males in the Carson & Barnes stable.
RBBB has Charlie, Vance, Rajah, Romeo, Casey, Irvin, Doc, Gunther, and Rudy. Vance is completely retired now and Casey is on breeding loan to the Ft. Worth Zoo for three years.
Have Trunk will Travel has had successful births with their herd. Their male Tusko is on Breeding loan at the Oregon Zoo. They have another male born there named Amos that is eight years old now. The Johnsons are active in the film industry and animal legislation issues as well as performances.
The Houston Zoo is now home to Thai from the Eloise Berctold (sp.)elephant act owned by Morgan Berry. He has also become a successful breeder although it's highly doubtful his offspring will ever enter the circus being born in a zoo.
Maybe this adds a little more to what you already had.
Bob

Bob, I was at the Johnson ranch about a year and 1/2 ago, I rember tusko ( who ironically didn't have tusks) But I was told that Amos had died of a small intestinal blockage years ago. I don't remember where i heard that from. But i do know that Amos wasn't there in 2005.
