This cat's name was Cubby. In addition to rolling the globe without a track also was billed as a comedy cat -- whatever that met. She was one of the cats that went to Paul Kelly's after the 1955 season.
Thanks for these photos Eric. As far as the music, we just played records that seemed appropriate.
Jim, Cubby was a "BITCH" cat. Nasty temper. She played dead at the end of the act was was pulled by her tail to the exit shute. Gene Garner 'aka JIM BELL" worked the act one winter for the Kellys. Eloise also worked the act for them. I was originally going to but these cats were huge and I weighed all of 84 pounds. I might also add that "CUBBY came into season the first show. Was not real crazy about having her tail pulled.
Jacot was famous for this free-rolling ball. He'd indicate where he wanted the lion to roll and directed her about the cage with no track. This is an advantage of a stage arena. You'd need the track in the hinterlands, where we play city dumps and cornfields. But no matter what Jacot broke, he added refinement. As Okie said, "The old man was death on tricks."

Maybe someone knows if this is the same Cubby lion that tore up Red Hartman in Kansas City, in '59
