Hey, the two stud books are online.

AZA used to restrict access. Did the person who posted PDF versions of the books (on a weekend) think he/she was being helpful, or is this a new policy with unfortunate timing?

Sorry if I jumped to conclusions or confused anyone. For once, this morning, I was going to check a fact about Tarra before blah-blahing, so --

I google searched for "Tennessee Elephant Sanctuary" and INSTEAD of bazillion links to Buckley's pages that would have been normal, got links to the two stud books, independent postings maybe. In months past, AZA used to password-protect or somehow limit access to members.

The stud book is not top secret, but finding no links to the sanctuary in the news (in the first 3 pages of search results) and the sudden switch to national distribution of names and locations of all elephant owners seemed like taking the heat off Buckley and aiming troublemakers at people who weren't asking for any extra publicity.

It seemed odd, and this past week was odd enough.

I just got home from seeing a zoo elephant so desperate for some mud that as soon as she dropped a little dung she picked up the biggest clod she could, ran to the water pipe and started very purposefully mixing and testing, mixing and testing, until she got a little bit soupy enough she could shower some over her back.

I wasn't shocked at a smart animal making creative use of dung, just sorry for the poverty of having no loose dirt, sand, or mud, only sharp gravel available -- having to make her own mud, a small handful at a time, on a miserably hot afternoon -- not the only problem there, but insult added to injury. I considered taking over the shaved ice stand by force, partly because the elephants kept sniffing every time they poured out watermelon or banana-scented syrup, but a far longer-term improvement is called for.

Sorry, blog master, you should always feel free to delete when I start ranting miles off topic. Today I'm seeing problems contrived, not accidental or unavoidable -- that's what set me off.
