Dullest show on Earth
Editor: I looked forward to taking my family to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus last week at the Wachovia Arena, but we were all disappointed and bored with the event.
How can this be called a “circus” with no lions, no tigers, no bears, oh my? No high-wire acts, no slack-rope acts, no incline wire, no aerial gymnasts, no bikes on aerial wires, no sword-swallowers, fire-eaters, or human cannonball. No sway pole, no great balancing acts, no trampoline, no knife throwers, no sharpshooters.
No thrills, no chills, no death-defying acts, no excitement.
No juggling acts — OK, there was one guy with three pins. No gangs of trapeze artists. No contortionists, no classic clown acts, just some amateurish attempts at slapstick. No sideshow, no freaks, no geeks, no menagerie, just a few penned-up livestock.
A few trained dogs and household kitties in the center ring were not too thrilling. There were only seven elephants, far short of what a “circus” needs, and their performance was honestly not jumbo.
Oh, there was also one family of tumblers, a couple of horses and go-karts racing around the stage, and a troop of nimble videographers feeding their images to a Jumbotron. If I wanted to watch a show on TV, I would have stayed home.
This production is the antithesis of a circus and RB&B&B should be embarrassed at this offering.
This show has sunk to the level of a small-town carnival. It is not the circus of the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s or ’80s. I miss “The Greatest Show on Earth!”
This show is themed the “Circus of your dreams,” but in reality it should have been labeled “The Circus . . . in your dreams.”

Buckles...
I'm a little hesitant to change the subject, as I know that RBBB is a major source of interest here, but the wife and I went to see Cirque du Soleil's Quiddam last week. I've never seen seen the Cirque, although I've been meaning to for 10-15 years. Maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe Quiddam is not their best showing, but we were very disappointed. Everything the reviewer of Ringling said could apply to Quiddam, except there are NO animals. There is No energy. The 20 minute clown routines are NOT funny. There ARE 3 separate web routines. And everyone had so much pent-up anticipation they all clapped like crazy when one guy did a handstand. The tent is the star of the show. We had gone to see Ian Garden's show a few weeks earlier, and had a thouroughly entertaining evening. But it is still difficult to explain to people how great the circus used to be, just a few years ago!

Beasts, others MIA
Editor: The greatest show on earth? We bought tickets to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as Easter presents for our kids. We promised them great times at one of the best circuses ever.
Wow, did the circus make us look bad. The show was so boring and dull, it was a joke. What happened to the tigers, the lions, the acrobats from last time around? The only thing great about this event was the price of popcorn, a whopping six bucks.

This is a timely article since I hear that USA Today has a front page story on The Incredible Shrinking Show but with the usual spin.
Here is that link for the USA TODAY article.
USA TODAY article
And yes, it's "Spinning like a top"
Yesterday in Casper WY we added a third show, something we've been doing a lot lately. Today Nebraska Public Television came out to the circus with a palentologist who is said to be the authority on extinct elephants. His take, our old fashioned three ring circus made him feel like he was six years old again -- and seeing living elephants in the fields around Crawford NE, where they roamed 10.000 years ago was a bit of genuine magic. Circus doesn't have to disappoint.
Yes, the USA Today article contained some Feld spin. But it also cited the traditional Carson & Barnes show (nice work, Ben!) and the return of elephants to Cole Bros.
