Ted Svertesky 1978

Ted was my assistant on the show and was eventually in charge of the herd but unfortunately was killed in the 1994 train wreck.

That place in Tenn sure could use a lesson or two about loading ramps. Hopefully they will not have a cause to use one again. Four hours to unload a circus elephant shows just what experts they are.It was fun to watch as they were so screwed up I e-mailed them and by magic my helpful hints were used. They worked. Common sense hasn't found that place.

(from Eric)

Is life a boon?
If so, it must befall
That Death, whene'er he call,
Must call too soon.

I only saw "Yeoman" done one time, we were in NY with Big Apple and it
was done by a Civic group off, off Broadway.
Well done tho, my favorite character in the piece is the jailer Wilfred Shadbolt.

Some friends in NY once took Barbara and I to a restaurant frequented by Theater Types and without warning the whole place erupted into "Hail Poetry" the wonderful choral piece from "Pirates of Penzance".

Little John just snail mailed me some old Circus World stuff and included was Jewell News Memorial program. I am at a loss for words when I even think about the loss of such Great Friends and people as Ted and Jewell. Ted was such an open person and so full of life that he had NO EGO! Or at least none I ever witnessed! His stories and personality were always First Class. I don't remember the date of Ted's demise but Little Johns info put Jewell right at April 1, 98. Funny that Jewell was eight yrs my senior and was like a Big Brother to me! Ted was more my age and he felt like a Brother to me also! Forgive me for rambling but these two guys will live forever in my Heart and Mind as True Friends! I am Honored and Blessed that I also consider Buckles in the same light! Those were the Days, at least in my life! I will add that Jewell died at the age of 53- I just turned 53 last month.

Karen, Don't be sad for the ones who left us too early. They had the Circus. Ted did realize his dream. Not many of us get to do that no matter how long we have here on earth.

dutchess, you have to be an animal person to understand the simple basics. It seems there is alot of experts today who know nothing about animals and their behavior. Sad to see Ted with so much life and gone in a flash. Buckles is this Sid in the pic?

Darryl These people in Tenn are fund raisers, not animal people by any means. As Barnum said 'There Is A Sucker Born Every Moment' This time they are the Suckie. Laugh every time I think of the way things went. Lots of work, but it happened.

This is "Mudu" one of the former Billy Smart elephants. I think her name was "Chi Chi" when she arrived but Hugo changed it. He seemed to like that name for some reason, in fact when he first came to U.S. in 1947 the five German elephants that he brought were "Kernaudi", "Minyak", "Mudu", "Sabu" and "Icky".
As you can see was starting to show her age at this point and we only used her for Spec and long mount. We had plenty of elephants.

forgot about Mudu. She came to us at Circus world when you took her off the road. Nice old cow. Icky is the hindleg walker in the GSOE movie I beleive. She came from Sri Lanka in 1932 or 33 to Hagenbecks in Germany. Hugo broke her there. Had the pleasure of working her as a lead elephant for the five act. Replaced her with Carmen in Philly in 1980.
