This picture was taken 6/21/19 at Haverhill, MA. The trainer is Henry Boucher and the elephant empress is Blanche Welles. Elephants in the back are "Frieda", "Snyder" and "Floto". In front is "Trilby" is sitting on "Mom".
In all fairness to Miss Welles, the Floto Show had a bad history of runaways and maybe she knew something we don't. Possibly she sacrificed her art form in favor of a tight grip on the headpiece.

Barbara said that Jean Allen and Louie Reed taught her to face forward while doing this mount. Like you see Karen doing in today's picture below.
