From the Canestrelli family, her brother Freddy was married to Ortans Cristiani. Her father was involved with the importation from India to the Ringling Show of BOMBAYO who did a tight wire act but used a rope rather than a wire. Quite a novelty that allowed for considerable more elevation and was called a "Bounding rope" act. Tosca learned the act as a girl and I remember her later on the Orrin Davenport Shrine dates, she used an Aztec type motif as this picture shows.
I remember Herbie Webber walking up the incline rope. He wore shoes with a split between the toes to grip as he climbed. When he reached the top he turned his feet outward and slid down backwards, stopped at the bottom by prophands holding up a mat that he crashed into
I knew Herbie well, the type act he did was called the "slide for life" since the performers did just that. However the "bounding rope" that La Tosca used was horizonal and was just any tight wire act but a rope was used.
This act of Herbie's was billed as Chief Thundercloud. Bobby Moore and I teamed up with the prop boys to stop him at the base, when one guy would fire off Herbie's blank shotgun for the finish. Herbie had a lot of flash in all he did, and if the slide for life was his 2nd act, it sold like few others. What a pal from the '64 Beatty show. We were on Kellner together, and I certainly miss him.
Herbie did one of the best "Brodies" I ever saw, and he milked it to the hilt. I used to watch him after the act, and the rigging was sloughed, in the blackout, limping off the floor til he was out of sight of the public.
One night in the Cadillac, Jane Beatty noticed Herbie passing us, and mentioned what a nice act he had. Mr. Beatty smiled and said, "And boy, he does that fall and pushes everybody away and boy, he FIGHTS to get back in there, and every time, he brings down the house." We were on a Kellner date and were outnumbering the audience. A prop boy innocently asked Herbie if he were going to take that fall tonight. Herbie smiled and said, "Are you nuts? For THIS house?"
