I have not seen a big top so close to the rail road tracks. Would think this could cause problems for the animals when a train went through. Also damage to the animals from tripping over the rails. May be the horses where photgraphed between the rails to keep them still for the photo. The horses thinking they were ring curbs.
My dad told a story about a show that once showed on a lot like this and after being assured that the trackage was no longer in use, rather than drive stakes, tied off one side of the big top to the tracks.
I'm sure you can see where this story is heading, about an hour before show time, along comes a switch engine and down goes the tent.
ouch!!
Does anyone know if the Jinx in this picture was ever married to Paul Nelson? Thanks.

"Jinx" Norma Adams was in fact married to Paul. I knew her when I boarded a horse at her farm in Louisville, Ky. She was a very important part of my teen years and told us all stories about her days in the circus.
This was my Great Aunt. I have loved searching for information on her. Brings tears to my eyes to see such beautiful pictures of her and her friends. When she passed away her then husband got rid of all her memorabilia. When she retired she spent her years on her horse farm rescuing horses.
I love seeing all the photos - I too learned to ride at her English Station Stables in Louisville KY
Norma was my mothers great aunt and she spent years during the summers on that horse farm. My mom has memories of the peacocks and certain workers who worked the stables. One was Shelley (Not sure how it was really spelled) and she brushed my moms hair at night when she stayed there. My mom remembers all the stable workers just being so kind and taking her out on a horse back ride down through the farm. There was also a concrete drinking well near the house that she used to fill up for my mom as a small swimming pool, but it was really a drinking station for the horses. That place was magical. And so was Aunt Norma.
