The Reviews are coming in.....

My father asked me to post this. Last night he has a very tough decision.....

Go see "Ken & Nicole's Incredible Shrinking Show" or watch the Rose Bowl on his nice SONY HDTV.

It was one heck of a game!

Thanks to the internet just about every article newspapers post you can now access. Here in Tampa we have the Tampa Tribue & St. Petersburg Times. Both papers had a review of the show last night.

Strange thing, the Tampa Trib writer as you can see pulled a Jason Blair/NY Times routine and just rehashed PR material while the SP Times reporter did see the performance. Needless to say whoever has to give Ken & Nicole the reviews this morning.......I bet whoever that poor soul is tried to hide the SP Times article.

Here they are, just click on the underlined text below.

The new show is a result of "market research" of the audience.

HMMM...did Shakespeare, Monet, Flo Ziegfeld, Barnum, Bailey, the original Ringling Brothers ever need a market reasearcher to tell them what to create? I think not.

What is missing is good old-fashioned "Showmanship"---remember when producers were producers and not just concessionaires with a circus?

Showmanship---the ability to combine talents of many people (acts, animals, costumers, musicians, lighting people, etc.) into a breathtaking ensemble of creativity and ENTERTAINMENT.

Just my humble opinion,
Billy

There's nothing wrong with market research and focus grouping, it doesn't have to conflict with "showmanship." It appears that the Feld group reinvented what was already a less than magical show, aiming for an audience they didn't have and won't get. Pre-teens and teens. As the St Pete review points out, when you throw in pop culture references that are 6-8 years out of date, that's pretty pathetic. So much for those Emmy winning writers. It may be that some of the reinvention isn't all bad. It may be that the 62 foot oval performance space will work. But it won't work if it's filled with lackluster talent. The RBBB decline has been about replacing real talent with flash. Of course there are still good performers on each of the shows -- but not all of the performers are good -- as they once were. Whether the video system is anything more than Drive-In Circus is going depend a lot on having something worth watching, because if it's "ordinary" it's not worth watching anymore than the Jumbotron is at most of the baseball games in a given season. The irony is that the video system would probably be a genuine enhancement if it highlighted a great cage act.

I'm curious, will the Blue Unit still carry big cats in the menagerie?
