"Movin' On" #3

Barbara is crouched down in front giving Anna May commands with Ben and Gary off screen on each side while the truckers , Claude Akins and Frank Converse, try to convince Keenan Wynn to put the elephant back in the truck. You may notice that Anna May is carrying the tramps knapsack.

Barbara said that the people were in motion when this scene was shot and every time they would stop Anna May would place the knapsack on the ground, then when they moved ahead she would pick it up and place it in her mouth again as they walked along.

Not to belabor the point but Barbara said that the Producer of the show was fascinated how clever Anna May was manipulating things with her trunk.
Of course she learned all these things when my dad trained her to do the old "Dinner Table" and "Barber Shop" routines years before.
One day he asked if Anna May could be brought to the Holiday Inn where everyone stayed and have her register at the desk. He even had the Maintainence people remove the divider so she could fit thru the front doors. Everyone was there for the occasion and after Barbara handed her the pen she made several marks on the page and everbody roared when she handed the pen to the astonished clerk.

What does belabor mean? Did Anna May have luggage? Was she booked for the night or just a couple of hours? I can imagine they let her do what she wanted, no questions ask. She was one lucky elephant and you are one lucky family to have had her.
