Lalea Ray

This is Barbara's mother and the act she trained for the Bill Green Animal Farm in Fairlee, Vt. I was told that these animals were hybred llama-guenaco.

It funny how names came about on the circus. We had hundreds of Princesses, Queens, Counts, Cournals (sic) Kings, etc. I was an Empress and did not know it for six months. I found this out when I was asked to go into town and pick up the news paper matts from the office. I read it and discovered I was royalty. I always thought I was The Dutchess. This was not a term of endearment I was to learn later.

Years ago I cared for a pretty big collection of camelids in Central Florida, and there was much debate over whether you could really "cross" a llama and a guanaco, or whether they were the same animal anyway -- kind of a horse/pony thing. Back then I think the taxonomy called llamas Llama glama, and guanacos Llama glama guanicoe indicating a subspecies. Since then I think guanacos have been reclassified as separate species Llama guanicoe. What I remeber is that I could pretty much tell when the camels and the llamas were moody, but the guancos would catch me by surprise.

That ring is spotless. I for one know how hard it is to keep animals and their spaces clean, especially with no running water in those days. I used to occupy my time polishing harnesses, replacing rinestones, bleaching a ponys (Thunder) tail and mane, bathing a Zebra that liked to break bones in the grooms hands. Whisk was the best brightener of the day. This I did for fun and to this day when I am showing a dog we arrive in the proper attire of the season. The thing that impressed me at Kelly Miller was how nice and clean everyting looked. Laura's Jack Russel terrier had to take and wiz on the ring curb and a prop man was there to clean it up. As soon as he left the dog made another trip with more serious business. Owning a Jack Russel Terrier myself I could only laugh at the little beast. Mine go to the Purina compound for agility comatision(sic) next week and god only knows what he will do. He is solid white with one small brown spot the size of a quarter, hince the name Spot.
