Fantastic place for a circus fan to go.....in between an issue of White Tops or Bandwagon !! Congrats and keep it coming! Gary & Lisa Payne of CT
After a person from the enamy camp (a/r) put my address and all my business on the web I get offers of all kinds. Even offers from people who wanted to donate to my business that I no longer have. I direct them to Riddles. Some times when things are slow I read some of that stuff. If I were younger I might take up some of this stuff. I always tell my lady friends when something hangs to you waist you are tooo old for that nonsense. I am almost there, but then again I am short waisted. A few good years left the way I see it.
Remember when I made that BIG FLUKE about an e-mail about you Buckles? If you did not get flack from that I doubt if you will here. I don't have the guts to sign my own name to this it was such a stupid thing to do.
I have a question that I don't know where to post it. I used to stay at a hotel in French Lick Indiana while attending the Kentucky Derby, When I was moving from Colorado to Illinois the moving van was driven by two men from French Lick. Noticing all my circus stuff they told me that that hotel (and that is all the town consist of)was origonialy built as a circus winter quarters. Does anyone know if this is true? The men had no other info to share.
They were right but the Circus Winter Quarters was in West Baden and owned by Ed Ballard who not only owned the circus but was a major player in the Hotel/Casino in French Lick.
In 1919 he went into partnership with Jerry Mugivan and Bert Bowers forming the American Circus Corporation and using both West Baden and Peru to house their circuses which by 1922 was Sells-Floto on 40 cars managed by Zack Terrell, John Robinson on 30 cars managed by Sam B. Dill, Hagenbeck-Wallace on 30 cars managed by Bert Bowers and Gollmar Bros. on 25 cars managed by C.D. "Danny" Odom.
This gave them 125 cars of railroad equipment on the road and 49 elephants divided up on the four shows.
Ballard was quite the character. I've always wondered what attracted him to circus business, though I assumed it was the grift. At the time he was murdered in 1935 he may have been one of the wealthiest men in the country. Since the bulk of his fortune came from illegal casino gambling, an exact figure was a little hard to come by. Certainly he could have bought out John Ringling with greater ease than Ringling buying the Corporation shows. He's still remembered pretty fondly by folks into gaited horses. He breathed new life into Saddlebred bloodlines. When Larry Bird was the King of All Basketball sportscasters used to talk about French Lick like it was podunk. People forget that French Lick/West Baden, and Hot Springs, AR made Las Vegas look pretty tame.
Ballard had a son everyone called Chad, his real name was Charles Edward, probably the same as his father.
One of the baby elephants imported in 1922 was named after him "Charlie Ed".
Unfortunately Chad was injured severely when a pony cart he was driving around winter quarters overturned and one of his legs had to be amputated.
Years later when I was working at Circus World in Baraboo, Bob Parkinson mentioned that Chad and family were on the grounds visiting but I missed seeing him.
